Self- Determined Project
- Eligible Members: Ages 9-21
- Clubs offering Self- Determined- Rushing Rivers
The Self-Determined project allows members to choose, plan, carry out and evaluate a project of their choice. It begins with a project outline to the leader and must be 4 to 6 months for juniors or groups, and 10 to 12 months for
senior members. Some examples of projects: landscaping your backyard, research and photo story of a family vacation, building a shelter for animals, blacksmithing, or making a quilt. Units and project outline
1. Project Units
Unit 1- Junior
A Jr. member may elect to choose, plan, carry out, and evaluate a project of their choice upon the written approval of the project leader and the designated Youth Development staff person for the self determined project. Satisfactory completion of the project will result in achievement.
Unit 2- Group
Two or more members of any age may elect to choose, plan, carry out, and evaluate a project of their choice
upon the written approval of the project leader and the designated Youth Development staff person for the self determined project. Satisfactory completion (To include individual record keeping) of the project will result in achievement.
Unit 3- Senior
A Sr. member may elect to choose, plan, carry out, and evaluate a project of their choice upon the written approval of the project leader and the designated Youth Development staff person for the self determined project. Satisfactory completion of the project will result in achievement. (A 75% mark on the project is required for a member to be eligible for a Self Determined Certificate.)
2. Members must have a self determined Project Leader and/or resource person to provide project leadership.
3. Members should fully understand the concept of this project:
(A)Choose -select a project of your choice.
(B) Plan- Develop a 100-200 word written outline of their project and submit to Project Leader and Youth Developement Staff person designated for the Self Determined Project for approval prior to start of project.
(C) Carry Out- Unit 1 & Unit 2- Over a period of 4-6 months, maintaining a record keeping system. Unit 3- Over a period of 10-12 months. At least one project inspection to be carried out by the project leader.
(D) Evaluation- Project to be exhibited on Achievement Day and/or a self evaluation by member to be carried out.
4. Resources. Self determined manual to be used as a basic project guide. Location of specific resources to be the responsibility of the member and/or project leader, including developement of a record keeping system.
5. Project Leader and Youth Developement Staff to evaluation unit for achievement purposes.
6. Each 4-H family should in addition to this publication have 4-h publication #150, BRITISH COLUMBIA GENERAL REGULATIONS FOR 4-H CLUBS.
7. The following "interest pile" of self determined projects are included to give you some ideas. but remember possibilities are unlimited.

- Early model cars, model airplanes, architectural models
Art
-Painting, weaving, pottery, dance, poetry, short story writing

-Singing, Song and music composition
Seasonal
-Learing to ski, outdoor camping canoeing, bird watching
Hobbies
-Bottle collection, stamp and coin collection, rock collection, astronomy
Community Services
- Study of family history, Role of the church on our community, Role of myself in my community, Assistance project for low-income group in our community.

Greek History, Customs of foreign countries, native culture in your area
